A severe water pollution incident has occurred in the Nam River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi Province, north of Bangkok, Thailand. Due to heavy rainfall, wastewater storage ponds at several large-scale pig farms along the riverbank overflowed, causing large amounts of untreated wastewater—high in ammonia nitrogen and organic pollutants—to be discharged directly into the river. As a result, a stretch of the river approximately 10 kilometers long turned black and emitted a pungent, foul odor; dissolved oxygen levels dropped sharply; wild fish died en masse; and large numbers of dead fish were visible floating on the river’s surface.
