A fire broke out at a PVC plastic chemical plant south of Columbus, Ohio. Large quantities of plastic raw materials and chemicals on the plant premises continued to burn; the fire was intense and spread rapidly, and it took a long time to bring it under control. The thick smoke produced by the fire contained various toxic and hazardous substances, including hydrogen chloride, dioxins, and lead. It formed a towering column of black smoke that spread with the wind, blanketing surrounding residential areas and significantly affecting air quality in the town of Groveport.
