Cross-Border Haze Sweeps Through Singapore

The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in all five regions across Singapore has reached unhealthy levels, with the Central region recording a PSI of 154—the highest in the country—while the Eastern, Western, and Northern regions also exceeded the 100 threshold. The pollution primarily stems from transboundary haze caused by peat and forest fires in Indonesia’s Kalimantan region. The smoke has drifted over Singapore via atmospheric circulation, reducing visibility and leaving a distinct smell of smoke in the air. Fine particulate matter and harmful gases have accumulated near the ground, exacerbating respiratory irritation.
