A section of a major irrigation canal in California’s San Joaquin Valley suffered a localized breach, causing the water to break through the embankment and overflow. Large amounts of murky wastewater—rich in nitrogen fertilizers and herbicide residues after being recycled through farmland—flowed into the main stem of the San Joaquin River via low-lying channels.
