Chemical Plant Wastewater Leak in a Tributary of the Oder River in Poland

In southwestern Poland, the water in a section of the Oder River has taken on an abnormal color, emits a pungent odor, and is littered with large numbers of dead freshwater fish floating on the surface. A source-tracing investigation confirmed that a leak occurred in a wastewater storage pond at a nearby chemical plant, causing partially treated industrial wastewater—containing various harmful chemicals and heavy metal residues—to flow through underground drainage channels into a tributary of the Oder River. The toxic wastewater significantly depleted the water’s dissolved oxygen levels while directly poisoning aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, and shellfish. Aquatic plants along the riverbanks have begun to wither, and the wetland ecosystem along the river has been severely impacted.
