A massive forest fire has erupted near the city of Kradovo in eastern Serbia. Fueled by strong winds and extremely dry vegetation, the fire spread rapidly within a few hours, with the burned area now exceeding 1,000 hectares. Meteorological authorities have issued a warning that a new round of extreme heat is about to hit Serbia, with maximum temperatures set to exceed 40°C once again. Extreme drought will further elevate the fire danger level across the country, and smoke from the wildfires will continue to worsen regional air pollution. The Balkan Peninsula has already been hit by multiple waves of wildfires this summer, with ecological and economic losses continuing to mount.
