Persistent heavy rainfall in Japan’s Kanto region has claimed 13 lives and caused severe flooding in many areas. In addition to directly causing loss of life and property damage, the torrential rain has also triggered significant secondary environmental pollution: oil stains on city streets, plastic waste, household garbage, as well as fertilizer and pesticide residues from surrounding farmland have been washed in large quantities by rainwater into rivers, eventually flowing into Tokyo Bay.
