In an industrial zone along the lower reaches of the River Thames in the United Kingdom, a compliant drainage pipeline has been found to be discharging wastewater in violation of regulatory limits. The wastewater contains various heavy metals—including cadmium, lead, and copper—as well as small amounts of persistent industrial additives, and continues to flow unchecked into the main river channel. A yellowish-brown plume of contaminated water is slowly moving downstream toward the estuary with the current. Since heavy metals are difficult to degrade, they are highly prone to being adsorbed and settling into the riverbed sediment, forming a long-term reservoir of pollution.
