Due to the persistent drought caused by the extreme El Niño, the current concentration of fires in the Brazilian states of Pará and Amazonas represents only the first phase of this fire season. The fires are expected to continue spreading northward, with the peak of the fire season anticipated to occur from November through December in the rainforest regions of Roraima, northern Pará, Amapá, as well as Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. Forested areas that burned during the El Niño events of 2015 and 2023 are now more susceptible to intense wildfires due to damaged vegetation and lower moisture content, which will result in more severe ecological damage and air pollution.
