Smoke and Haze from Forest Fires Ravage South Sulawesi, Indonesia

The Air Quality Index in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, rose to 154, reaching the “Unhealthy” level. The pollution stems primarily from local forest fires and cross-border smoke and haze drifting in from the Kalimantan region. The persistent haze has caused a significant drop in visibility in urban areas, and concentrations of fine particulate matter in the air have consistently exceeded safety standards. Due to below-average rainfall during the dry season, forest fires and haze pollution have persisted for several weeks across many parts of Indonesia. The cumulative number of respiratory disease cases nationwide continues to rise, and the haze is also disrupting transportation, daily production, and daily life.
