Off the coast of Puerto Madryn in Argentina’s Chubut Province, the carcasses of five southern right whales were discovered stranded within a 48-hour period. This wave of whale deaths has persisted for nearly five months, with the deceased including both calves and adults; the annual death toll is on track to break historical records. Offshore oil and gas seismic exploration disrupts the whales’ navigation and damages their immune systems. Combined with offshore wastewater discharge, pollution from fishing debris, and threats from ship noise and collisions, these multiple human activities have collectively triggered this ecological crisis.
