A massive stranding of pilot whales occurred on a beach near the Arthur River on the West Coast. Approximately 140 pilot whales were stranded at the scene, with more than 80 already dead. Due to the receding tide, the surviving whales were exposed on the mudflats for an extended period, and their vital signs continued to deteriorate. This is the most severe mass stranding of whales in Tasmania in the past three years.
