Hurricane Causes Sewage Spill on Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai, Hawaii, was hit by Hurricane Lowell, which brought heavy rainfall, flooding, and widespread power outages. The disc filter facility at the Waimea Wastewater Treatment Plant suffered severe overload due to water surges, unstable power, and saturated treatment capacity, resulting in the continuous overflow of approximately 20,000 gallons of wastewater that had undergone biological treatment but had not completed deep filtration and disinfection. Large volumes of grayish-brown wastewater—containing suspended solids, organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, bacteria, and pathogens—rapidly spread along drainage ditches surrounding the plant, seeping into low-lying soil and potentially flowing into estuaries and coastal waters.
