Heavy rains fell in the Outer Danube region of Hungary, washing away mine tailings and topsoil from abandoned mining sites on steep slopes. The runoff flowed down mountain ravines and into a tributary of the Danube River. Monitoring data from environmental stations along the river showed a temporary increase in suspended solids and trace levels of heavy metals, with the murky, yellowish-brown water flowing slowly downstream.
