A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, with a focal depth of 70 kilometers. The tremors were strongly felt across a wide area, including Tokyo, Saitama, and Kanagawa. As of this morning’s tally, the earthquake has left 37 people injured. In Tokyo, burst water mains have caused flooding on roads and disrupted water supply, while several rail lines have been temporarily suspended. The seismic activity may have stirred up seabed sediments, posing a risk that radioactive materials and various pollutants deposited on the seabed could be released and spread.
