California Vegetables Trigger Interstate Outbreak

The Salinas Valley in California, a key U.S. production hub for leafy greens, experienced widespread outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis after its irrigation water became contaminated with fecal matter. According to disease control and surveillance data, from May through late July of this year, confirmed cases were reported in 45 states across the U.S., with 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases and over 11,500 suspected cases; the outbreak has already resulted in two deaths. This type of parasite attaches to fresh vegetables via contaminated irrigation water and causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms when consumed by humans. At this stage, the large agricultural enterprise Taylor Farms has been placed under official investigation, and head lettuce produced at its overseas facilities is considered the primary source of the outbreak.
