The cyanobacterial bloom in Daecheong Lake, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea, continues to worsen, with pollution levels reaching their highest point of the year. Currently, the water column down to a depth of 1 meter is completely filled with thick layers of algal residue. Water quality monitoring results indicate that microcystin concentrations in some areas have reached the warning threshold. The process of mass algal die-off and decomposition rapidly depletes dissolved oxygen in the water; mass deaths of wild fish have already occurred in some shallow, slow-moving areas of the lake, and the risk of damage to the local aquatic ecosystem continues to rise.
