Smoke from Canadian Wildfires Continues to Affect the Great Lakes Region in the Northeastern United States

NASA atmospheric monitoring data shows that brown carbon and PM2.5 particulate matter from wildfires in Canadian forests continue to drift southward, covering parts of Michigan, Ohio, and New York. The particulate matter, carrying black carbon aerosols, continues to be transported across the ocean toward the Arctic, where it settles on glaciers, accelerating ice melt. Heavy metals trapped in permafrost are released into the Arctic Ocean along with meltwater, exacerbating chemical pollution in the polar regions.
