Brazil’s President Lula is backing the reconstruction of a highway through the Amazon rainforest to improve transportation and boost the economy, but the initiative has raised environmental concerns. The road was built in the 1970s and has fallen into disrepair, while the ecological importance of the Amazon rainforest has been affected by deforestation in recent years, with evidence suggesting that nearly 95 per cent of deforestation outside protected areas of the Amazon over the past 30 years has taken place within a certain distance of the road or river, and that building or rehabilitating the highway could facilitate illegal logging and land-grabbing, resulting in even more deforestation.
