A monitoring report released by the Brazilian environmental organization Greenpeace Brazil reveals that the Amazon River estuary is heavily littered with plastic waste, and factories along the coast are illegally discharging untreated industrial wastewater (containing heavy metals and chemicals). This has led to the widespread death of nearby mangroves, the destruction of habitats for pufferfish and manatees, a sharp decline in local fish catches, and excessive levels of shellfish toxins.
