According to a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report, the annual cross-border trade in illegal toxic waste worldwide exceeds $18 billion, primarily involving the transfer of pollution from developed to low-income countries. Over 80% of electronic waste is not disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Illegal dumping and incineration are poisoning water sources, soil, and the atmosphere, releasing non-biodegradable toxic substances that cause irreversible ecological damage and trigger global environmental risks.
