In 2010 BP’s Deepwater Horizon deep-sea oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing a major oil spill. Years later studies have found that oil contamination remains in thousands of species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico until 2020, that the oil has compromised fish health, and that the ecosystems in the region have suffered long-term damage and declining biological populations, and that the impacts of the spill are likely to continue for much longer.
