Global warming has caused summer temperatures to soar, and many cities plan to transform waterways into summer resorts

[Global Times Comprehensive Report] According to the British “Guardian” report on the 19th, as global warming causes summer temperatures to soar, rivers in cities have become an important place for citizens to cool off. After a century of neglect, city managers in many cities around the world have begun to pay attention to the role of rivers again and spend huge sums of money to control the long-standing pollution problems in waterways.

Rivers once played a vital role in the social structure of cities. Waterways were not only places for citizens to socialize and entertain, but also provided necessary habitats for local aquatic species and were an important factor in regulating the local climate.

However, over the past 100 years, rivers flowing through cities have been greatly negatively affected by urbanization, and many have even become containers for urban sewage, pollutants and other wastewater, posing a serious threat to public health. According to the European Environment Agency, most rivers flowing through cities in Europe are now full of chemicals.

After a century of neglect, planners from London to Zurich to Paris are refocusing on urban waterways as global warming causes summer temperatures to soar, trying to transform once-polluted rivers into essential places for citizens to escape the heat and relax.

In order to showcase the city’s waterways after the renovation, 110 athletes jumped into the Seine River to participate in the triathlon at the Paris Olympics in August this year. Through television broadcasts, the renovated Seine River and surrounding scenery were presented to the audience.
