On April 16, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) concentrations in the air in San Diego’s South Bay (around Imperial Beach and Chicano Beach) exceeded the state standard of 30 ppb by 150 times, with levels in some areas briefly surging to over 2,000 ppb. This caused nearby residents to experience headaches, nausea, sore throats, and difficulty breathing, prompting the temporary evacuation of numerous households.
