Long-Term Risks of Nanoplastic Pollution Continue to Emerge

Approximately 27 million tons of nanoplastics already exist in the upper waters of the North Atlantic. These particles can accumulate through the marine food chain, posing a long-term irreversible threat to the safety of European fisheries and public health. Simultaneously, persistent exceedances of ozone and PM2.5 levels in multiple Western European countries not only drive up respiratory disease hospitalizations but have also been directly linked to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety among residents, further intensifying pressures on people’s livelihoods.
