Deadly Train Derailment in Mexico

On the morning of December 28 local time, a train derailed in the Transoceanic Corridor region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico’s Oaxaca state (near the town of Nizanda). The involved Trans-Oceanic Atlantic Train, carrying 250 people (9 crew members and 241 passengers), derailed while crossing a bridge and plunged into a valley approximately 7 meters deep. The accident resulted in 13 deaths and 98 injuries, including 5 seriously injured individuals. Thirty-six people remain hospitalized for treatment, while 139 have been rescued. Rescue operations have largely concluded, and rail traffic remains temporarily suspended.
