The Marriott Resort & Spa at Mai Khao Beach in Phuket, Thailand, has partnered with the international conservation organization WildAid to advance local marine protected area development and coral reef restoration efforts. The nearshore coral reefs along Phuket’s coastline serve as vital assets for tourism activities like snorkeling and diving, while also providing crucial nesting grounds for sea turtles. However, these waters currently face multiple pollution and ecological threats, including coastal development, sewage discharge, plastic pollution, abandoned fishing gear, and overfishing. This partnership will conduct long-term ecological monitoring of the local Mai Khao coral reefs, explore the feasibility of wild restoration techniques, and promote Mai Khao Beach as a community-managed marine area. These efforts support the global “30×30” conservation target.
