The Korean National Cancer Center cultured human cells in the lab with Fukushima nuclear contaminated water and found that carbon – 14 caused a 2.3-fold increase in the probability of DNA double-strand breaks. Despite TEPCO’s claim that “the radiation dose is below the natural background,” scientists warn that low-dose radiation may affect multigenerational health through epigenetic mechanisms. The National Physicians Association of Japan has launched a “No to Radiation” campaign to demand that the government disclose full-spectrum data on the constituents of nuclear-contaminated water. As of April 2025, 56,000 medical professionals have signed the petition, a record for an environmental campaign in Japan’s medical community.
