On March 27, the European Union announced that it is co-funding an Arctic Pollution Monitoring Project with UNEP, focusing on the dispersion pathways of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and microplastics in polar ecosystems. Data show that concentrations of POPs in the Arctic have reached 10 times the global average, threatening the survival of species such as polar bears and seals.
