March 1 is the third United Nations World Seagrass Day. Seagrasses play a significant role in supporting food security, mitigating climate change and enriching biodiversity, but they are currently facing serious threats. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, a piece of seagrass the size of a soccer field disappears every 30 minutes, and globally about 7% of meadows are lost every year, with coastal development, pollution and other factors contributing to the degradation of seagrasses and their associated ecosystems.
