World Wildlife Day Focuses on Bryde’s Whale Conservation

World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3 every year, and 2025 will also mark the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). 2024, Guardian of the Wilderness, in conjunction with the Guangxi Academy of Sciences and other organizations and institutions, initiated “Bryde’s Whale Day,” which focused on Bryde’s Whales that can be observed offshore in Guangxi. Recently, a team of Bryde’s whale researchers from Nanjing Normal University in China confirmed that the identified individuals of Bryde’s whales on Weizhou Island in Beihai have formed the world’s largest nearshore population of small Bryde’s whales. The Weizhou Island Administrative Committee and others jointly issued the “Weizhou Island Whale Watching Guide” and “Weizhou Island Bryde’s Whale Watching Handbook” to standardize the way of boating out to sea, noise control, boat speed and distance, etc., in order to safeguard the living environment of Bryde’s whales.
