Feb. 22 – Local media in Cyprus quoted bird conservation experts as warning on Feb. 21 that the number of flamingos migrating to Cyprus during the winter months is plummeting due to wetland degradation. 2025, only about 30 flamingos were recorded at the Akrotiri Salt Lake in Cyprus, the lowest number since 1992, when systematic monitoring was first carried out. Exploitation of wetlands affecting water quality and quantity, reduced zooplankton and other aquatic food sources, environmental pollution and climate change are also key factors contributing to the decline in flamingo populations.
