New Zealand orcas disturbed by human activity

According to January 29, 2025, the New Zealand Department of Conservation is reminding the public to follow the rules for marine mammal interactions after a family group of five orcas was spotted in Raglan and Kawhia Harbors. There have been reports of people getting too close to the animals and a boat is suspected of chasing the group in Raglan Harbor. Killer whales are powerful animals, and this group, which includes calves, is particularly vulnerable to injury or disturbance, and may even be separated from their mothers. Disturbance of killer whales by human activities such as boats has become a local concern.
