Russia focuses on cleaning up illegal dumpsites

Russia has made the cleanup of unauthorized dumpsites one of its priorities in environmental governance. As of 2024, 242 sites have been cleaned up, including 157 large dumpsites, but 33 large unauthorized dumpsites in 23 regions of the country remain to be cleaned up. The cleanup of dumpsites will not only improve the environment of contaminated sites, but will also improve living conditions for more than 20 million people, reduce land contamination from dumpsites, and reduce health hazards for the population.
