COP30: A ray of hope for the Amazon rainforest

In 2025, the city of Belém, capital of the Brazilian state of Pará, will host the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the first global summit to be held in the Amazon rainforest, India Today reported on January 2nd. Leaders will gather to showcase their strategies for protecting the Amazon rainforest and seek practical support for collaborative efforts to curb deforestation and promote sustainable development. Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva said COP30 will be used as a platform to “create synergies” between the UN Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate and Desertification, and also plans to launch the Tropical Forest Financing Facility, with the goal of mobilizing 125 billion dollars to protect more than one billion hectares of tropical forests.
