Costa Rica’s Cocos Island National Park, home to a wide range of endangered marine life, has been threatened by illegal fishing, and in 2022, WildAid formed a network of partners, including the Costa Rican government, to combat and stop illegal fishing, and installed a new radar system. According to the latest satellite data provided by Global Fishwatch, only 67 hours of illegal fishing were monitored around Cocos Island from January-August 2024, a significant drop from 5,587 hours during the same period in 2023, and in August 2024, there was no illegal fishing activity at all in the area.
