Multiple crises from the Hervey Bay toxic algae incident in Queensland

In 2024, genetic testing off the coast of Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia, revealed the presence of previously undetected toxic algae. The study identified 15 species of toxic methanogens, some of which were found for the first time in Australian waters, posing a serious risk to marine ecosystems, wildlife, human health, and the global economy.
