Ecological crisis triggered by Black Sea tanker capsize

On December 15, 2024, the Russian tankers Volga Oil 212 and Volga Oil 239 capsized in a storm in the Black Sea. The accident resulted in the death of at least one person, and a number of rescue vessels and helicopters were quickly mobilized to the scene, with the majority of the crew successfully evacuated.

The accident resulted in the release of approximately 9,000 tons of fuel oil, which poses a significant threat to the ecosystem of the Black Sea. Harmful substances in the oil will jeopardize the survival, reproduction and growth of plankton, fish and other marine organisms, and even cause their death. The spilled oil will also pollute beaches, reefs and other habitats, destroying the homes of marine life and making it difficult for seabirds, seals and other creatures to survive. At the same time, the fishery resources in the Black Sea region will be seriously affected, fishery production will decline, fishermen’s livelihoods will face a crisis, and contaminated seafood may also threaten human health.
