Guarding the Amazon Rainforest: Crisis and Hope at the Same Time

Covering an area of about 5.5 million square kilometers and spanning a number of countries, including Brazil, Peru and Colombia, the Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and is known as the “lungs of the Earth”. However, in recent years, due to human activities such as illegal logging, mining, and agricultural development, as well as frequent droughts caused by climate change, the rainforest has been decreasing in size, and many rare plants and animals are in danger of extinction. However, after taking office, Brazilian President Lula pledged to achieve “zero deforestation” by 2030, and over the past 12 months ending in July, forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon dropped by 30.6% compared to the same period a year earlier, with deforestation falling to its lowest level in nine years.1710.
