According to an assessment of 47,282 tree species worldwide, at least 16,425 species of trees are threatened with extinction, according to an IUCN news release issued during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia, on October 28, 2024. Factors contributing to the decline of tree species include climate change, human logging, mining and road building, and countries with high numbers of endangered tree species include Fiji, Cuba and Madagascar.
