In October 2024, river levels in the Amazon Basin dropped to record lows. This widespread drying was closely linked to the El Niño phenomenon that lasted from the second half of 2023 to the first half of 2024, which led to an intensification of the drought in the Amazon basin, especially during the dry season, from July to September, when precipitation decreased significantly, resulting in a sharp decrease in runoff in the Amazon River basin.
