The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a proposal to protect whales off the coast of California by expanding the area to be avoided by ship traffic to cover approximately 4,476 square nautical miles of whale feeding habitat and extending ship traffic lanes to the west of, in and around the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
