Protecting the Ozone Layer: A Far-reaching Action

September 16, 2024 is the 30th International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer is significant as the “umbrella” of the Earth.

Phasing out ozone depleting substances (ODS) has multiple implications. As far as the ozone layer itself is concerned, it can repair and strengthen the protective function of the ozone layer, effectively absorb ultraviolet rays and maintain the ecological balance of the earth. In terms of combating climate change, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help alleviate global warming. In terms of protecting human health, it can reduce the damage caused by ultraviolet rays to human skin, eyes and other organs, and lower the risk of diseases.

The Montreal Protocol provides the framework and guidelines for the protection of the ozone layer. Protecting the ozone layer requires the joint efforts of all countries in the world. On the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, we should take active actions in various aspects to advocate environmental protection concepts, research and develop technologies, strengthen regulation and reduce the use of related substances.
