Chiba Prefecture’s Water Source: The Crisis of Excessive Organic Fluoride Levels

On August 9, 2024, the Chiba Prefectural Government and Kashiwa City Government announced the results of the additional water quality survey conducted in June. The results showed that the concentration of organofluoride exceeded the Japanese provisional upper limit (50 ng/liter) in four of the five areas where additional water samples were collected. Among them, the concentration of organofluorocarbons detected in the water source near the Shimoso Air Base of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) was 420 times the Japanese provisional upper limit value.

From an environmental point of view, the contamination of water sources is undoubtedly a heavy blow to the ecosystem. It may affect the survival and reproduction of aquatic organisms, and jeopardize the ecological balance of water bodies. Animals and plants that depend on water sources for their survival may face difficulties in survival due to the deterioration of water quality, which may even lead to the reduction and extinction of species.
