According to the report, by 2024, 8.4% of the world’s marine and coastal areas have been included in documented protected areas, and since 2020, the area of new protected areas has doubled the size of Colombia’s national territory.51 countries and territories already have more than 30% of their land covered, and 31 countries and territories have more than 30% of their land covered by sea.
