Hong Kong’s North Lantau Marine Park: A New Milestone in Marine Ecological Conservation

On November 1, 2024, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government announced the establishment of the North Lantau Marine Park (NLMP), the eighth and largest marine park in Hong Kong, to enhance the conservation of the Chinese White Dolphins (CWD) and the marine environment and ecosystem in North Lantau waters. Located in the northern waters of Lantau Island in Hong Kong, the park covers an area of about 2,400 hectares and its establishment has increased the area of protected marine habitats in Hong Kong to over 8,500 hectares. AFCD will also discuss with the relevant Mainland authorities on the establishment of a Guangdong-Hong Kong Chinese White Dolphin Marine Protected Area Network Platform to strengthen cooperation between the two places.
