Conservation of Brazil’s rainforests on the horizon: deforestation declines significantly

 Brazilian government officials said on November 6, 2024, that deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest region fell 30.6% in the most recent statistical year (August 1, 2023-July 30, 2024), with the lowest scale of deforestation recorded in nine years. During this period, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon was 6,288 square kilometers. In the Cerrado savanna region, Brazil’s second-largest ecoregion after the Amazon rainforest, 8,174 square kilometers were deforested, a 25.7 percent decrease from the same period last year and the first decline in five years.
