The Dutch government had launched an outreach program in 2023 to encourage people to ditch their cars for bikes for short trips. The plan was to get 100,000 people cycling to work by 2025 and to increase the total distance people traveled by bike by 20% by 2027 compared to 2017, with an investment of 800 million euros to build new bike lanes, improve road safety, and increase parking spots.
