The bodies of two gray whales with obvious signs of vessel strikes were discovered in San Francisco Bay, USA. The cause of death was confirmed to be collisions with large cargo ships, resulting in skull fractures and ruptured internal organs. According to NOAA data, a total of 70 gray whales have died in this area between 2018 and 2025, with 40% of those deaths attributed to vessel strikes. Climate change has reduced food supplies in the Arctic, forcing gray whales to venture into busy shipping lanes in search of food. This has exacerbated malnutrition and weakened their ability to avoid danger. Although speed limits have been implemented in shipping zones, collisions remain frequent. The gray whale population has declined by more than 50% since 2016, and the species faces a severe survival crisis.
