In a natural forest area in the province of Limburg, located in the Flemish Region (Dutch-speaking region) of Belgium near the Dutch border, 216 barrels of abandoned highly toxic chemical waste were discovered. Tests conducted by environmental authorities revealed that the drums primarily contained highly carcinogenic substances and heavy metals such as benzene, toluene, lead, and cadmium. Some of the drums were damaged, causing the waste liquid to seep into the soil and contaminate shallow groundwater. Police investigations indicate that the waste originated from a cross-border smuggling ring, which illegally transported and dumped it late at night to avoid disposal fees. Local authorities immediately cordoned off the site and suspended the use of all farmland and wells within a 5-kilometer radius. The cleanup and soil remediation are expected to take 6–8 months, at a cost exceeding one million euros.
